Visakhapatnam Port is one of the leading major ports in India.  The port is located in the east coast of India. The port has three harbours viz., outer harbour, inner harbour and fishing harbour.  The port has 24 berths.  Passenger ship from Vizag port to Port Blair (Andaman Nicobar Ilands).

Visakhapatnam Port Trust has mooted construction of an elevated freight corridor from VCTPL near Fishing Harbour to Convent Junction to decongest city roads. VPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu says funding for the project will be sought under Sagarmala project. A flyover up to a length of eight km is proposed to decongest traffic via Three Horse Junction, St. Aloysius School Junction and seven-metre high compound wall of the port.

In a significant development, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has sought funding for an elevated freight corridor (EFC) under the ambitious Sagarmala project of the Central government to decongest traffic on National Highway. The project, which is in conception stage, envisages laying corridor linking Port Connectivity Road, Gangavaram Port and join highway on Anandapuram-Anakapalle route via Sabbavaram to ensure speedy evacuation of cargo. The project will cost around Rs.800 crore.“We have submitted a report to the Centre. Depending on the response, the modalities will be worked out for implementation of the project mainly aimed at avoiding choking of highway in the city limits,” Visakhapatnam Port Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu . Visakhapatnam Port Trust, one of the 12 major ports in the government sector, is investing huge amount mostly in PPP mode to achieve a cargo handling capacity of 125 million tonne in next three years.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust is planning to set up a Multilevel Logistics Park near Anakapalli in a 400 acres of land with a capital cost of Rs. 500 crores, which will be the first Logistics park in the East Coast of India. This park will be useful for storage/distribution of items imported from Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia to the various destinations in the Country. It also fulfil the market needs of 7 States within the range of 600 Kms from Visakhapatnam. 25 Kms long railway line also to be laid from the Vizag Port to the proposed logistics park. In this Logistics park, facilities like warehousing, cold storage, assembling, packing units facilities also to be provided. With this proposed International Standard Logistics Park, Visakhapatnam will become the International Business Center. Government of Andhra Pradesh has allotted 400 acres land to Visakhapatnam Port Trust for setting up Logistics Park near Anakapally.

In a landmark achievement, Visakhapatnam Port Trust received a fully laden gearless Panamax vessel with a draft of 14 metres in the inner harbour on Monday (28.09.2015), signalling the completion of long-awaited capital dredging. This is a highly challenging task involving rock dredging because of which the project conceived 2009 got delayed. This is, perhaps, the first-of-its-kind in the world going by the need for large volume of rock dredging for which several foreign companies had expressed apprehensions over its success.

The Visakhapatnam Port Trust recorded a cargo of 58.04 MT during the Financial Year 2014-15 retaining its fifth rank among other ports with Kandla occupying the top spot followed by Paradeep, JNPT and Mumbai.

06.04.2016 : Ministry of Environment and Forests has approved the expansion of container terminal. The estimated project cost is Rs. 633.11 crore and the work will be commenced soon. Visakha Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (VCTPL) will take up this project. The MoUs were signed by Deputy Chairman of VPT with representatives of the organisations in the presence of Union Minister for Shipping Nitin Gadkari, Secretary to Ministry of Shipping Rajive Kumar and Chairman of VPT M.T. Krishna Babu.

The VPT has signed an MoU with Visakha Container Terminal Pvt Ltd. for establishment of second container terminal with an investment of Rs. 633 crore on PPP mode and entered into another MoU with HPCL on allotment of land for expansion of the latter’s refinery capacity.

The third MoU was with ITD Cementation for reconstruction of EQ2 to EQ5 berths . The project is expected to be completed in the next 24 months. VPT and a JV between it and NHAI, the Visakhapatnam Port Road Company, agreed on an MoU for extension of the two-lane road connectivity to NH-16 into four lane . The fifth MoU was between VPT and Balmer & Lawrie for establishing Multimodal Logistic Park on 100 acres of VPT land.

25.05.2016 : Vizag Port Trust Chairman Mr. Krishna Babu said that Two Heavy Flyovers to be constructed in Vizag Smart City under Sagarmala Project. Central Govt has agreed in principle for this project and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be ready by next month end. 1. Convent Junction to inside the Port for free flow of heavy vehicle traffic into the Port, with an estimated cost of Rs. 100 crores. 2. Sheelanagar to Sabbavaram, 13 kms, with a cost of Rs. 500 crores, which is to be linked with the proposed Anandapuram to Anakapally 6 lane National Highway (NH-16) bypass road.

14.10.2016 : The port handled 30.67 million tonnes in the first half of current financial year compared to last year’s 27.64 million tonnes. The marginal increase in throughput and completion of mechanisation of some of the berths has also given the hope that the port would achieve 61 million tonnes target set by the Ministry of Shipping for the current year 2016-17. The total cargo handled last year 2015-16 was 57.03 million tonnes.

21.11.2016 : 21.11.2016: Four VPT berths set for ‘makeover’. As part of its modernisation move, the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has started the process of decommissioning the four berths from EQ 2 to 5 and constructing two new berths in their place in the inner harbour of the major port. The contract for decommissioning of four old berths and construction of two new berths has been awarded to ITD Cementation, VPT officials said, adding that the work is expected to be completed in the next two years. VPT sources said that initially EQ 2 and EQ 3 are being decommissioned.

Adventure sports in city to get a fillip!

With long beach road and the government’s thrust on promoting tourism, adventure and water sports, the city may soon emerge as a destination for tourists looking for exciting fare.

With the State government unveiling its New Tourism Policy for 2015-20 and awarding provisional registration, scuba diving, that has been going on for sometime at Mangamaripeta is set to witness a fillip.

“With the government’s pro-active steps and support we intend to launch scuba diving for tourists by the end of October or the first week of November,” says B. Balaram Naidu, Director of Livein Adventures.

He and F Rahaman of Crescent Adventures have received their provisional certificates from the Chief Minister which permit them to make financial and technical arrangements and obtain statutory permissions, licences and NoCs to start their projects in adventure sports.

A former Indian Navy sky diving instructor and a qualified submariner, Mr. Naidu obtained his instruction certificate from Professional Association of Diving Instructors, the USA, and trained in Perris Valley in the USA. He is also a part of first Indian Navy Skydiving team.

100 youths trained

Apart from training students of Bishop Cotton School, he has so far trained about 100 youths in scuba diving in Visakhapatnam since 2013.

The initial training was in swimming pools in controlled conditions for two days where 25 skills would be imparted including overcoming emergencies. By the fourth day they can go for scuba diving in the open sea.

The State government’s policy is quite encouraging as it gives 15 per cent subsidy on the basic investment and a reduced VAT from 14.2 to 5 per cent once the project is launched, he says.

The State government will also provide changing rooms, toilets, water and power connections and road connectivity to facilitate scuba diving.

While skills for turning to professional diving can be imparted, scuba diving has a lot of tourism potential.

Tourists will be given basic instruction and training in a tub and then taken for scuba diving for about 45 minutes and 40 meters is the depth allowed for recreational purpose, he explains.

Mangamaripeta has rock formations with a lot of aqua life, he says. The aqua life is friendly unless provoked, Mr. Naidu points out. He intends to start with a five-member team initially.

He also got provisional registration for kayaking and canoeing, speed boat and water skiing and hiking and trekking.

New Delhi: The best way to reach Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh is to take a train from Vishakhapatnam — and it’s about to get better. Tourists on this route will be the first in the country to sit inside glass-domed coaches that will allow them to take in the spectacular views of nature along the route.

The train that runs between Vishakhapatnam and Araku will initially have two coaches with windows and roofs made of special shatter-resistant glass to provide an all-round view of the valley to travellers during the four-hour, 130-km journey. Similar services are offered by train operators in Switzerland and the Canadian Rockies.

The picturesque Araku Valley, located at an elevation of about 3,000 feet in the Eastern Ghats, is rich in thick forests and is known for its coffee plantations. An initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, the glassdomed coaches will be available by the end of March 2015 and the project could be replicated on other scenic routes, including between Baramulla and Qazigund in Kashmir Valley.

“We have no doubt that in Kashmir there would be great demand due to the high tourist footfalls in the state. In Araku, we will assess the interest it generates,” a senior government official said. The viability of the project will depend on the response of passengers, who will pay premium fares for such coaches.

The tourism ministry will pay Rs 4 crore to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, a unit of the Indian Railways, to provide the domestically manufactured, air-conditioned coaches. In the pilot run, the fares for these coaches are likely to be 5 per cent higher than the normal AC coach ticket. “Product innovation is essential to promoting tourism. We have to create those wow factors to attract tourists and give them a reason to explore newer places in India,” said Arjun Sharma, managing director of Le Passage to India, a travel company headquartered in New Delhi.

Andhra Pradesh ranks third in domestic tourism, having drawn more than 15 crore visitors in 2013, according to ministry data, and is next only to Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The state’s main attraction is the pilgrimage centre of Tirupati and lesser known parts such as the Araku Valley will need to be promoted to make initiatives such as the glass-domed train coaches successful.

Breaking his silence on shifting of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday made it clear that under no circumstances it would be relocated.

Putting at rest the talk of shifting the zoo, which was thrown open to public in 1977 after developing in natural surroundings in an area of 625 acres, Mr. Naidu said the government was committed to developing the zoo further by creating additional facilities to attract tourists and spread awareness on wildlife.

Human Resources Development Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao raked up a controversy during Vanamahotsavam programme in May by saying that a decision was taken at the highest level to shift the zoo and develop the area into a botanical garden and introduce night safari. His statement led to a strong criticism among students of various schools and colleges, nature lovers and non-government organisations. The issue fuelled speculation that real estate interest was behind the move.

The zoo, which is a part of Kambalakonda Reserve Forest, has 850 animals of 75 species, including several primates, carnivores, mammals, ungulates and birds attracting on an average 4,000 visitors every day.

To a pointed question whether the zoo would be shifted, Mr. Naidu said: “there is no plan to relocate the zoo.”

The Chief Minister said he had directed the officials on how to strengthen the zoo and develop Kambalakonda Nature Park located opposite the zoo into an ideal destination for eco-tourism.

Vizag Bird Watchers’ Society member and chartered accountant P. Vikram, who had launched a campaign on social media against the move to shift the zoo, when contacted, told The Hindu that they were very happy with the announcement not to relocate the zoo.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao and his Cabinet colleague Ch. Ayanna Patrudu were present when Mr. Naidu made the announcement.

Waste water treatment plants.

The GVMC’s efforts to supplement water supply to the industry with recycled water may soon come to fruition if a public-private partnership project materialises.

The three sewage treatment plants at One Town, Appu Ghar, and Mudasarlova have a capacity of 63 MLD. Waste water from them can be used for industrial purposes after tertiary treatment.

“About 57 MLD of water will be available after treatment. The GVMC will provide land to the agency for setting up the recycling plant,” says Municipal Commissioner Pravin Kumar. An agreement has already been reached with an agency for tertiary treatment, but the price for kilolitre of recycled water has to be hammered out. The agency wants to sell it at Rs.49 a KL.

“We got the rate evaluated by credit rating agency CRISIL. A draft report has already been given and a final report is awaited,” Mr. Pravin Kumar said. The GVMC supplies bulk water to industry at Rs.36 a KL, which is proposed for revision. With change at the helm and a new MA&UD Secretary taking over, the decision got delayed.“In a couple of weeks, there will be more clarity,” he said.Mr. Pravin Kumar is of the view that the rate for recycled water should be competitive compared to the revised bulk water price. The GVMC itself can supply the recycled water to the industry.

The recycling of water will make available an additional 12 mgd of water. Water recycling is one of the parameters for smart city. Project is aimed at catering to the needs of the industry

Civil work for construction of a building begins today

All is set for construction of a building of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre at Aganampudi near here. The building is coming up on a 77-acre site allotted by APIIC. This is the site where Volkswagen planned to set up its car manufacturing unit ten decades ago, but it did not materialise.

The hospital, which has been functioning for about one year, is all set to enter a new phase with the contractor concerned beginning the Rs. 154-crore civil works on Friday. Rajya Sabha member T. Subbarami Reddy got the hospital sanctioned when he was Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Science and Technology. The first phase of the hospital will have 100 beds and is expected to be completed in 18 months.

At present the hospital is functioning from containers that converted into rooms. It has the latest equipment in digital radiology, digital sonography and mammography. Each room is named after a river.

The hospital is adequately staffed with oncologists, surgeons and physicians along with paramedical staff. “Each day 25 to 35 patients are being treated and 15 are being given chemo therapy while surgeries are being conducted at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the city, for which we have entered into an MoU with the hospital,” hospital director D. Raghunadharao has said. The hospital’s pharmacy sells medicines at a very low price.

The hospital is also providing palliative care, hospice service, homecare, and conducting screening camps. The hospital has adopted two villages in Vizianagaram district. It is also conducting camps at Narsipatnam area. The service is being provided with the help of Rotary Club, Maanava Seva organisation, Sneha Sandhya and individuals like Dwivedula Sastry.

The Visakhapatnam Port Trust has been approached to hand over one floor of the port hospital to be converted into a cancer care unit where operation theatre and other facilities would be provided. The port management has tentatively agreed to the proposal.

A ‘dharamasala’ (choultry) is also coming up along with the hospital for the convenience of patients who need surgery or intensive care, and their attendants, according to Dr. Raghunadharao. When completed, the ‘dharmasala’ will accommodate 50 families and the patient and attendant will be provided food free of cost.

Kapuluppada IT layout 1st phase by Sept

The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has decided to go ahead with the development of an IT layout in the Port City and has identified around 200 acres for the IT layout that is expected to be ready for handing over to IT companies by the end of August or early September.

According to APIIC sources, the survey for the land has been completed and the corporation is now looking at providing basic infrastructure, including power, water and road connectivity to the IT layout, following which it would be developed into multiple plots.

Ironic as it may sound, Vizag, the smart city of the future, and Andhra Pradesh’s proposed IT hub has no e-waste disposal mechanism in place unlike other IT hubs such as Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Being an IT hub means generation of a lot of e-waste, which is why scientific e-waste disposal is a must, point out environmentalists. However, the good news is that in the next six months to one year, the Port City is likely to get an e-waste facilitator for safe disposal of electronic junk with a treatment plant proposed to come up at Ramky Group’s Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC). AP Pollution Control Board’s Vizag division environment engineer Lakshmi Narayana said, “So far Vizag doesn’t have any facilitator for e-waste collection. Around 25-30% of the e-waste is resold or exchanged based on online offers from electronic shops. The remaining is taken by unauthorised collectors for extraction of metals from the products or sometimes taken to Bengaluru and Hyderabad for processing.” “However, with Ramky group coming up with a facilitator for e-waste in the next six months to one year, we will have collection centres, electronic bins for safe disposal and processing plant for reuse or recycling,” he explained.

When contacted, JNPC CEO Lal Krishna confirmed that an e-waste treatment plant, as per the approved protocol, is in the offing but is at an initial stage. “Right now, a survey is going on as to how much e-waste is generated per month in the city. In the course of one year, the plant is supposed to come up in our pharma city on the lines of e-waste treatment plants in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The treatment procedure will include segregation of metals, plastic, unusable residual products and reusable components. The reusable components will be recycled while the others will be treated, disposed of or extracted as per the standard guidelines for e-waste disposal,” he said.

APIIC decides to construct a superstructure on Hill No. 2 at Rushikonda

The A. P. Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has decided to construct a superstructure with a built-up area of three lakh sft atop Hill No. 2 of Rushikonda, which is fast emerging as Madhapur of Andhra Pradesh.

“We have taken a decision to construct the building in an area of four acres near Sunrise Startup Village on Hill No. 2, which is part of the Madhurawada IT Special Economic Zone,” APIIC Executive Director V. Raghunath told The Hindu .

The building will become home to plug-in and plug-out operators. Part of the space would be allotted to start-ups.

“We will also allot space to small, medium, and large IT players so as to make Visakhapatnam a prominent IT hub,” Mr. Raghunath said.

Visakhapatnam, which has prominent IT players such as Wipro, Tech Mahindra, HSBC, Concentrix, IBM, and Cyient, is estimated to have clocked a turnover of Rs.1,800 crore to Rs.2,000 crore during 2014-15.

The State government has already appointed an American investment management firm, Jones Lang LaSalle, as consultant for construction of a 10-storeyed Signature Tower on Hill No. 3 of Rushikonda on the lines of the Cyber Towers of Madhapur with advanced architectural design.

“We are growing at the rate of 20 to 25 per cent and, once we get big players, the IT growth rate will reach its peak like in Hyderabad,” Rushikonda IT Park Association vice-president O. Naresh Kumar has said.

The Sunrise Startup Village, which was launched at Technology Research and Innovation Park early this year, will be fully operational by December 2016.

As of now, out of 450 registered with the village, 125 start-ups have been allotted space for incubation and mentoring. Govin of Singapore recently launched its operations to provide venture capital funding.

The State government has written letters to big IT companies to launch their operations in the city as part of efforts to promote ‘Brand Vizag’.

Six beaches to be developed with water sports and other facilities

Keeping in view the huge potential to put Vizag on world tourism map, six beaches will be developed with water sports and other facilities here by December-end.

During an interactive session with Confederation of Indian Industry here on Tuesday, Neerabh Kumar Prasad, Principal Secretary, Tourism, said the State government had promoted ‘Destination Vizag’ in a big way at Beijing International Tourism Expo and would send teams to woo investors and tourists during JATA Tourism Expo in Tokyo and World Trade Market in London.

He said as part of augmenting infrastructure, they had sought expression of interest for improving facilities at two old beaches and creating four new beaches in the city, which are Rushikonda, Bhimili, Sagarnagar, Yendada, Thotlakonda, and Mangamaripeta. The beaches will have changing rooms, cafeteria, umbrellas, and other facilities. Mr. Prasad said they were also taking steps to introduce cruise tourism in the city by developing a cruise terminal in the port area. Stating that they had big plans to promote Vizag, he said it just like ‘igniting a PSLV which ready for launching.’ He said the city meets all requirements for promotion in eight themes envisaged in the tourism policy. The themes include beach and water-based, eco tourism, religious, heritage, MICE, recreation and adventure, spiritual and medical tourism. Besides developing a tourist resort at Lambasingi in the Agency, which attracts tourists for sub-zero temperature, they were developing an USP for Lord Sri Varaha Lakshmi Nrusimhaswamy temple at Simhachalam.

According to members of the hotel industry, there is an immediate need to look at various issues dogging the industry, including marketing the city at both the local and international level, reducing the exorbitant liquor licence fee, setting up amusement and water parks, improving inter connectivity between tourism spots as well as focus on publicizing local hotspots. Pointing out that the state government needs to take advantage of big-ticket events such as the International Fleet Review (IFR) scheduled for February next year, Fortune Inn Sreekanya general manager Mitish Verma said, “People from more than 70 countries will be participating in the event. Only local hotels are coordinating with the navy for the event, but there is no state government input until now. The AP government needs to showcase Vizag by promoting places such as Araku Valley and the city’s beaches.” He said that with increasing international flights the government should also organize familiarization trips for tour operators and airline officials.Speaking to TOI, Hotel Daspalla general manager S Prashanth said, “The major problem for star hotels is the high liquor licence charges being imposed by the state government. We have to pay Rs 41 lakh in Vizag, whereas it is only Rs 38 lakh in a place like Hyderabad. There are about 37 star hotels in AP and the government will not lose much if they reduce the liquor licence charges. Also, high liquor licence charges are a burden on customers as we have not option but to pass them on to customers. But this is driving away customers, due to which we are not able to recover the charges.” “Every tourism spot needs to have basic facilities such as public toilets and drinking water facilities. We also need to interconnect tourism spots,” he added. Citing the example of  , he said, “If a tourist goes from Vizag to Thotlakonda, he doesn’t have any public transport option to go to other tourist spots from there unless he organizes his own transport. The tourism department needs to look into this issue.”

Pointing out that Vizag’s beaches need to be developed first, general manager of Green Park Hotels, Namit Sinha, said, “A sewage line connects to the beach at every 200-metre stretch. We need to clean it up.” He also demanded improved availability of foreign liquor. “The AP Beverages Corporation needs to stock foreign liquor and supply it to hotels.” Another hotelier, on condition of anonymity, said, “Tell me what the government has done to promote Vizag? Not a single BOOT (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) project for tourism has taken off so far. The government needs to fix a time frame for these projects and levy penalties if the promoter doesn’t complete it on time or take away the land allotted.”

“Vizag also badly needs an amusement park or water park. It’s unbelievable that a city of 20 lakh with tourist arrivals of nearly 50-60 lakh per annum doesn’t have an amusement park or water-themed parks. Unless we plan and execute new projects, Vizag will not be able become the Goa of the east,” he added.
